Health awareness
Cancer Research UK provides information for a variety of audiences about cancer prevention and early detection. We run a number of health awareness campaigns as well as producing a wide range of print and online information.
All of our messages are based on scientific evidence.
Our SunSmart campaign
SunSmart, our national skin cancer awareness campaign, is now in its fourth year. Since its launch there has been a significant increase in people seeking shade and avoiding the midday sun.
We produce a range of SunSmart resources for the public and health professionals. This year the campaign focuses on men and outdoor workers.
Open Up to Mouth Cancer
Our national mouth cancer campaign, Open Up to Mouth Cancer, launched in 2005 and targets the public and health professionals in order to promote earlier detection of the disease.
We are carrying out demonstration projects in two areas of the UK with particularly high rates of skin cancer Tower Hamlets, East London and the North East of England.
As part of this campaign we have produced a number of resources including the charity's first tailored, translated resource a booklet about the early detection and prevention of mouth cancer for the Bangladeshi community of Tower Hamlets.
We plan to produce many more tailored, translated materials, and are currently undertaking a project to assess the cancer information needs of ethnic minority groups in the UK.
Reduce the Risk
Reduce the Risk is the charity's ongoing cancer prevention campaign, which aims to raise awareness of the fact that half of all cancers could be prevented by changes to lifestyle.
The campaign highlights five important ways that you can lower your cancer risk:
- Stop smoking
- Stay in shape
- Eat and drink healthily
- Be SunSmart
- Look after number one.
This year we have teamed up with the charity Weight Concern to launch Ten Top Tips for a healthy body weight. All campaign resources can be ordered from the Reduce the Risk website.
Cancer awareness leaflets
We produce a range of cancer awareness leaflets, covering topics such as breast cancer, prostate cancer and lifestyle and cancer.
This constantly expanding series of evidence-based leaflets, with a total annual distribution of over one million, provides information for the general public about how to reduce the risk of cancer and detect it early.
The leaflets are checked by experts and rigorously evaluated in focus groups to ensure that the information is helpful, clear and appropriate.
Healthy living information
The Healthy living section of our website has a huge amount of detailed information for the general public about healthy choices that could reduce the risk of cancer.
As well as sections on cancer risk factors such as tobacco and alcohol, the site covers cancer controversies, explaining the evidence behind particularly contentious topics such as mobile phones, stress and powerlines.
